COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

ROOFING FELT

(ASBESTOS, ASPHALT SATURATED)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification HH-R-590.

This description covers asphalt saturated asbestos felts for use with asphalts used in the construction of built up roofs and in the membrane system of waterproofing.

Salient characteristics:

Shall be of the following types, as specified -

Type I = No. 15 asbestos felt, 630 g/m2 (J3 lb/10fJ ft²)

Type 11 = No.30 asbestos felt, 1370 g/m2 (28 lb/100 ft²)

Type 111= No. 20 asbestos felt, 830 g/m2 (17 lb/100 ft²)

Type IV = No.25 asbestos felt, i030g/m2 (21 lb/100 ft²)

Shall be in accordance with the requirements of ASTM D250.

Shall conform to fire resistant requirements of the applicable sections of UL 55A.

Shall be plainer perforated, as specified.

Shall be in roll form, width of roll shall be914mm (36 in) + 0.7 percent.

Area of rolls shall be as specified.

The issues of ASTM D 250 and UL 55A in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.

Workmanship. The finished material shall be free of visible external defects, such as holes, ragged or untrue edges, cracks, tears, protuberances and indentations, except for intentionally provided perforations and the associated protuberances.

Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.

Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.

Notes: Purchaser should specify type, whether plain or perforated, and area of rolls.
