COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ROOFING FELT
(ASPHALT, MINERAL SURFACED)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to class I of Federal Specification SS-R-630.
This description covers asphalt prepared, organic felt, mineral surfaced roll roofing felt for use as a single player or as a cup sheet in built up roofing.
Salient characteristics:
Shall be in accordance with the requirements of ASTM D249.
Shall conform to fire resistant requirements of the application sections of UL 55B.
Shall be in roll form, 914mm (36 in) + 0.7 percent in width, unless otherwise specified.
Area and mass of rolls shall be as specified below according to selvage width:

Note: The line of demarcation between the granule-surface portion of the weather side and any selvage shall be straight and parallel to the edges of the sheet. If the selvage is coated, the application of material to prevent sticking in the roll shall be uniform.
Color of weather side of roofing felt shall be as specified.
The issues of ASTM D249 and UL 55B in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Workmanship. The finished material shall be free of visible defects such as holes, ragged or untrue edges, breaks, cracks, tears, and protuberances and indentations.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
Notes: Purchaser should specify selvage width, width of roll (if other than 914 mm (36 in)), and color of roofing felt.
